Kris Wright

Kris was a 2010 Teach for America corps member in Dallas, Texas and is now the Director of Debate at Law Magnet High School. Kris previously coached at Southlake Carroll, University School (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Westlake (Austin, TX), and Marcus. Kris is an experienced camp instructor, having previously taught at a number of debate institutes, including VBI, NDF, and, of course, every TDC camp to date. Kris has coaching successes across national and Texas debate. At the Tournament of Champions, his students have reached semifinals, quarterfinals, and the bubble round. Kris has coached TFA State Champions in both LD (’09) and policy debate (’16). And he has qualified 7 students to NFL Nationals in LD, including two eleventh-place finishes. In Texas, he has coached finalists in LD at Grapevine (’08, ’10), Memorial (close-out in ’06, ’09), University of Texas (’08), Colleyville (’06, ’07, ’08, ’09, ’10), Churchill (’05, ’09, ’10), and St. Marks (’10).

Tom Evnen

Tom debated for four years for Lincoln Southeast High School in Nebraska. Tom twice cleared to elimination rounds at the Tournament of Champions. His senior year, he was a state champion and finalist at the TOC. Tom has coached debate at the Hockaday School (TX), University School (FL), Oxbridge Academy (FL), and La Jolla (CA). Tom’s students have cleared to elimination rounds at the Tournament of Champions thirteen times, including four quarterfinalists, two semifinalists, and a finalist. Tom has also coached two students to championships and one to finals at NFL/NSDA Nationals. In addition, Tom’s students have reached finals or won championships at Apple Valley, Blake, Bronx, the Bronx round robin, Emory, Greenhill, the Greenhill round robin, Harvard, Stanford, Valley, and Yale.

Devin Race
BA, Philosophy, Yale University

Devin debated for Westlake High School (Austin, TX). As a debater, he qualified twice to the Tournament of Champions and reached the semifinal round in the same year that he was champion and top speaker at the TFA State tournament. He placed 11th at NFL Nationals in 2009, and qualified to UIL 5A State as a sophomore, in 2007. He has coached for Stoneman Douglas High School, Marcus High School, and New Trier High School. His students have been in late outrounds of the Glenbrooks, St. Marks, Greenhill, Dowling Catholic, and the Tournament of Champions. Devin has also previously taught at the National Debate Forum (Boston, MA).

Andrew Waks
JD Candidate, University of Chicago
BA, Political Science, Swarthmore College

Andrew debated for four years at Westlake High School in Austin. From 2009 to 2011, he served as Co-Director of LD Debate at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City, during which time the school was the top-ranked school for speech and debate in the nation. He also coached the Middlebury College Parliamentary Debate Team from 2014 to 2015. While in college, Andrew volunteered with the Malcolm X Debate Program at Rikers Island (New York City’s main jail complex). Andrew competed nationally in high school LD, as well as in policy debate and American Parliamentary debate while in college.

Andy Werner

Andy debated for four years at Strake Jesuit (Houston, TX), during which time he qualified for the TOC twice, won TFA state and Blake, and led the Strake team to be first in the nation. Since graduating high school, he has coached students to win NFL nationals, to final at St. Mark’s and Greenhill, and to semifinal at the Tournament of Champions.
